Here is a photo of my reading area. I spent about 5 hours this summer sorting my 800 guided reading book library by level and placing a number label on each book and book baskets as well. I have 10 baskets and 800 books.I had no idea I had 800 guided reading books until I began labeling each one. Wow! That was a huge task. Remember Randy Anderson inspired me to get organized so I was determined to be organized or collapse trying. I have my students choose their 5 books for the Daily 5 each Friday. It was kind of wild at first, but we have routine now and it's so sweet to watch them choosing their books. They are so careful about what they choose I hear them saying "it's so hard to choose." How precious is that? My students are "LOVING READING." They beg me to sit and hear them read each day so I can hear how much they have improved. They are loving practicing their sight words in their book boxes too. I have a group of 17 students who in the first 6 weeks of school have stopped saying "I can't read" to "please sit and hear me read my words and books to you." I look up and see almost no behavior problems during stations because they love learning and they are having fun learning and reading. Wow! What a precious gift that is to a teacher. I love the Daily 5 and I'm also using the Whole Brain Teaching techniques too. If I forget to tell you at the end this year please know I've had a wonderful time teaching this class. (my fav. quote changed some from Pretty Woman).
